IS THIS TRAINING RIGHT FOR YOU?
Teach what is inside you, not as it applies to you, but as it applies to others” -Krishnamacharya
Teaching is an aspect of karma yoga – the yoga of service. A teacher training involves commitments in time and money as well as physical, mental and emotional energy. A teacher training should therefore not be entered into lightly. The focus of a teacher training is different to an immersion. An immersion allows you to delve deeply into your personal practice as it applies to you. A teacher training allows for a similar experience but a significant portion should focus on helping you cultivate the skills and confidence to share this practice with others, in service of others.
To optimize your investment you should take time to make sure a training is a good fit for you. Making the right choice will mean a training that is inspiring and elevating. A disappointing training wastes precious personal resources and is frustrating and disillusioning. To ensure the best fit and to optimize the learning experience asks yourself these questions:
What are the teacher’s credentials? Is he/she well-trained and highly knowledgeable, especially in the key areas that you wish to study further?
Do you resonate with their style of teaching? Does it inspire and challenge you personally?
Could you see yourself authentically sharing this teacher’s method or something similar in your own way eventually (even if it feels impossible now)?
Do you resonate with his or her personality or have similar values?
Would this teacher have a healthy teacher/mentor-student relationship with you?
Does the size of the training feel right for you – do you like to study in smaller or larger groups?
Is there the right mix in the curriculum of personal asana, pranayama and meditation practice as well as philosophical studies and study of effective teaching methodology?
Have you practiced in this teacher’s style of yoga before?
